Gardening: Day 1

I spent the morning out in the front gardens whipping 2 of them back into shape.  The house has a pretty sizeable piece of property and the flower gardens are suffering from about 3 years of neglect.  Yeah I know it's not exciting to read about but there is a sense of accomplishment when you take a garden that's nothing but weeds and spends hours of time hoeing it out, leveling the soil and then laying down mulch.  The particular gardens I worked on today are on either side of the driveway.  I know my dad and step-mom put the gardens in years ago because they have no sprinklers in them so they're not original to the house.  The unfortunate thing is both gardens only have a couple palms growing in them right now until I can afford some plants.  At least it's not a weed garden anymore.

About the sprinkler/irrigation system... Yeah it's almost totally screwed.  Although some of the heads have been replaced over the years, 3 years of disuse took it's toll on the remaining heads to the point that most are leaking too badly to be used.  Add that to the fact that the soil has built up over the years so the heads are now 2 inches below the soil surface instead of being 2 inches above.  It's going to take me around $200 for sure and maybe 2 days of work to replace the heads and get it working again.  Not to mention also having to do a slight redesign while I am at it.  I'll be adding a few sprayer heads to cover the front gardens along with reinventing a zone in the backyard that is currently a mix of shrub sprayers and rotary sprayers which is a no-no.  You can't mix the 2 types of heads because both have differing watering  (precipitation rates).  I've got my work cut out for me and it'll all have to wait until after Alaska.

Bankrupting America

EThis is a special message for the women of America. (If you
are a man who is reading this, please continue reading
because I need your help as well.)

Our nation is headed for the greatest moral catastrophe
in our history -- a catastrophe which will enslave our
children and grandchildren, undermine our families and
destroy the greatest engine of liberty the world has ever

I'm talking about the reckless "spend and spend some more"
mentality in Washington that has our nation teetering on
the brink of financial ruin.

+ + If you ran your family like the government...

Right now, Congress is at an impasse over $60 billion in
"cuts" to an already bloated budget that will saddle our
children with more than $1.6 trillion in additional debt
this year alone.

But the fact is, these "cuts" represent just 1.6% of this
year's federal budget which has skyrocketed 10.5% since
last year and 40% in just four years!

These miniscule "cuts" would be like the average
American family ONLY adding about $49,000 in
unpaid credit card debt this year instead of
$51,000 and then bragging about "cutting"

+ + It's time for women to stand up and say, "Government
Debt Is A Moral Issue. Stop Bankrupting Our Families!"

This endless cycle of federal debt is a moral issue that has
put our families and the future of our children and
grandchildren at risk. And I believe it is up to the women
of America to stand up and say, "Stop Bankrupting Our

After all, women are primarily responsible for the family
budget and the vast majority of consumer spending. We have
no choice but to balance the family budget!

In about two weeks, Congress will be once again confronted
with a choice -- continue the reckless pattern of spending
or do something now to stop the cycle and get our nation
back on track.

Because we have reached a crucial tipping point in this debate,
Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee has
just launched a National Petition calling on our nation's
leaders to "Stop Bankrupting Our Families" and pursue a real
plan to end the deficits and balance the federal budget!
Please go here to sign right now:

I want to personally bring your petition to the attention
of leaders on both sides of this debate prior to the next
vote. I want to show that women across America are drawing
a line in the sand and saying, "The deficit and runaway
government spending are moral issues that are bankrupting
our families!"

Louis, if you agree that it's time for women to
stand up and say that government debt is a moral issue
that is destroying our families, will you do two things?

First, please sign our petition by going here. Give me the
privilege of representing you before leaders in Congress
in the next few weeks on this issue.

Second, please share this message with women in your life.
Here are two easy ways to share this message:

1. Forward this message to your friends with a note from you.

2. Share this campaign with your friends on Facebook:

Pedicabs, Rickshaws and Tricycle

Does this look familiar?  It should if you've spent any time in the Philippines or SE Asia.  Yet this rickshaw doesn't come from the Phils it's here in the USA.  In the face of increasing gas prices Americans are slowly starting to wake up to the fact that having 3+ cars per family is a nightmare of high prices.  Reliable transportation alternatives are the way to go and coupled with a well planned public transportation system, Rickshaws such as this provide the final step of the journey.

At last count there are around 600 companies in the US utilizing these vehicles in downtown areas and tourist spots.  It's an idea whose time has come and it's interesting that we should borrow on something Filipinos have been using for decades.  It comes as no suprise that Jacksonville is interested in bringing such a service to the Riverside/ 5 Points area as we have a rather large Filipino population here.

At $3,800 each these trisikads are not cheap and any company wishing to start up a business with these would need a good deal of venture capitol however it would bring a large benefit to the downtown area by giving people a cheap alternative to walking between neighborhoods.

Irrigation System

Ok I don't have any enlightening posts today.  Truth be told I've spent the last 2 days trying to get dad's irrigation system working again.  It hasn't been used in maybe 3 years and like all things abandoned, fell into a state of disrepair.  After getting the water running again I spent my time pulling each of 32 sprinkler heads off and cleaning out the grass roots that had grown into the mechanism.  It's time consuming, dirty work as you have to dig out the heads and most were hidden by grass growing over top of them.  After 2 days it's a victory... of sorts.  The system is working, but 90% of the heads need replacing because of gasket issues.  I can get the job done myself, but it will have to wait until I get home from Alaska as the preliminary estimate is $266 to completely replace the sprinkler heads on the system.  Just another joy of home ownership.

Don't Ask Me Why...

Sitting On The Back Porch

I went to bed last night feeling like crap and woke up this morning and nothing had changed.  It's ok, Sunday, Dad is working and my stepmom was going into work for a few hours to catch up so I figured I could just rest today.  Except I have to cook dinner.  I'm used to this routine by now except it tires me because I can't be as creative as I want what with having to constantly work around Dad and Cathy's tastes.  Anyhow, I found chicken breasts, pasta sauce and spaghetti so Chicken Parmesan was a safe bet for dinner.

So now you're asking yourself what does all this have to do with the picture above?  Well in the course of meal planning I was missing the mozzarella cheese so a walk up to Fresh Market was in order.  Those who know me well, know I never go out unless I'm put together. Today I decided to go casual with a pink button up shirt, gray slacks and my blue check wool blazer.  I also loaded up my Velani Pipe with some "Berry Nice" tobacco for the walk.

I'm used to people reacting weird when I come walking down the street but today just took the cake.  Many cars slowed down and of the people out walking some stopped to stare and the more polite ones at least struck up a conversation.  I suppose in our dress down society today it's weird to see anyone dressed up even if what I was wearing was considered casual in the 1940's.  For me it's very comfortable, and being a big guy I am self conscious about how I look.  Since today was in the 70's the North Florida Natives were steaming already and running around in shorts and t-shirts like it's 90.  I'm pretty immune to heat having spent so much time in the Philippines.  At any rate it was a great walk and the best comment was the little kid asking "Why are you dressed like my grandpa?"

St Patrick's Day Meme

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: St. Patrick's Day

1. St. Patrick's Day is March 17th (Thursday). Do you celebrate and wear green? Drink Green Beer? Ignore it?

This year I think I am going to do a corned pork roast along with the obligatory potatoes and cabbage.  I'm not Irish so I've nothing to celebrate

$250,000 for a Tesla Roadster

3. One of the symbols of St. Patrick's Day is the leprechaun. Name a celebrity that you think would look good as a leprechaun. Name a celebrity that would look ridiculous as a leprechaun. Is there any one celebrity that would make a really scary leprechaun?

Peter Lorre if he was still alive could do the good and/or scary part... ridiculous? I dunno John Candy

4. For a prize of $1,000,000,000 you are challenged to make yourself a costume for a St. Patricks Day party. The ONLY rules are that you aren't allow to use clothing and it has to be green. Using anything other than clothing, describe your costume to us using ANYTHING else in the house.

There's green vertical venetian blinds on the sliding door I could use those and make myself look like the irish Michelin Man

8. On what television show—either past or present—would you like to make to make a guest appearance, and what role would you play?

Boardwalk Empire, any role would be cool, just to be on that show.

9. What else is on your mind? Go ahead and rant.

Conservatives rule, liberals drool... that's all I have to say. about that.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. Earthquake and Tsunami

As we all know this morning there was a devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan that caused a devatating 23 foot tsunami that swept all in it's path.  Our heart and prayers go out to those affected by these events and we hope that families will soon be reunited having been torn asunder by the fury of nature.

Thursday Thunks is back!!!

1. Charlie Sheen is an idiot and will probably end up with his own stupid reality show that will get 40 million viewers the first day and then people will fall asleep and quit watching. What person, celebrity or not, would you watch every eppy of a reality show if they were the center of it all?  The Royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

2. We all pay bills and wish we didn't have to. We all work and wish we could just lay around all day doing nothing. We all have those grown up responsibilities that we wish we could give to an African Elephant. Besides all the things the African Elephant got from you for the day, what is something from your high school years that you miss most of all? Just hanging wit close friends/classmate outside the school and going out to the beach to have a drinking session and do silly things.

3. Sometimes we want to grow wings and fly. Whats the farthest you've fallen? Gosh! way back 5 years ago when I was still working in one of the telephone company here in my city, I fall from  walking the stairs, it was a couple of feet ughhhh! my worse experience that time.

4. There is square bread, wheat bread, circle shaped bread, bread with nuts in it, funny named bread. When you open a bread bag, do you twist it when you are done or put the metal tie thingie back on? (And did you know that if you look at that metal tie thingie, it has a day of the week printed on it?) Yes I always twist it before putting it back in the refrigerator, actually its the first time I see it.

5. Some spoiled little brat (hey.. my opinion) called 911 on her teacher because he shook his own desk to get the students attention in the class. (I know, right?) Think back... what clever ways did a teacher of yours use to get the attention of the class or a particular student? It was my classmate (boy) that time that he is so noisy talking to my other classmate while my science teacher is still having her class, what my teacher do is she  throw a couple of chalks to my classmate, so my classmate was behaving after that. There also a time that my math teacher(she is so strict), has to punch my classmate just to behave and listen to the class lol.

6. Artwork, pictures, notes, appointments. How many magnets are on your refrigerator? A couple of magnets.

7. Cats are fluffy, dogs are soft, snakes are leathery, fish are wet. What is an animal that you have held or petted that you don't think many people have had the chance? A lizard?

8. I'm coming to your house to paint your kitchen. I'm bringing the paint. What color should I not have with me? Black.

9. Snow falls down, sometimes sideways. It still ends up on the ground. If snowflakes came in all different colors, which color snowflake would fall the fastest? Hmmm maybe purple!

10. We caved... well at least I did. Are you glad Thursday Thunks is back? Wohoo I'm so glad its back! Welcome back Thursday Thunks, we missed you!

Have a great day. Or not. See you around.

Just Barely

You ever get the feeling things could be going better?  I'm of that opinion every day it seems.  In May my time laid off from work ends and I get to go back to Alaska but it's bittersweet.  The job doesn't pay me enough to live off of and I still need to find something in Jacksonville... a task I have been unable to fulfill since August.  Couple that with high gas prices and now a 30% increase in air fares and my profits are cut into even further.  It's not the best of times right now, and although I cannot complain as I am fed, watered and have housing, cooling my heels hoping one of the myriad job applications I put in every week will get noticed is distinctly unfulfilling.  Oftentimes I wonder why others get hired when I don't even get the call.  Take the marketplace near me for example.  It's a high end grocer with high end prices and prides itself on excellent customer service.  I applied there in October and have applied for every open position they have advertised since then.  Never a call, a whimper, a moan, no thank you.  Then I go inside and get a look at the people they have hired.  Young kids who don't know which end is up.  Their customer service skills are lacking and the overall atmosphere of the store has come down in the last few months.  In the end I suppose I'm to intelligent/experienced for my own good.  Managers pass me over because I am a threat to them... someone who may ask awkward questions, rock the boat, or even (gasp) do my job well.  Seemingly the preference is for drones, idiots, yes-men.  You reap what you sow, corporations are going to learn this very soon.

Stopping Cigarettes

Yeah I must really be bored if I'm going to write about quitting cigarettes but here goes anyhow.  I've been a smoker for 25 years now and I just know it's time to stop with the cigarettes.  Nothing good comes of it and I bet my health would improve for giving them up.  I'm just doing it cold, no hypnosis, no patches or gum and my only support mechanisim is my wife.  I know she'll support me as she's been after me to stop smoking for years now.  Last year I was diagnosed with high blood pressure so the doctor put my on meds and it went from 160/90 to 120/80 on average.  I just don't like how the pills make me feel, at the thought had occured to me that smoking cigarettes was 75% the reson for the high blood pressure.

Well I stopped smoking cigarettes 5 days ago now and also stopped taking the BP meds.  My blood pressure remains around 125/72 on average so I guess I was right about the smoking being a big problem.  I also have more energy but am dealing with reprecussions of my body clensing itself after so many years of cigarettes... coughing mostly.  That all should lessen over the next week though.

One thing I am not giving up on is my pipe.  I have a collection I gained from inheritance and a few I purchased on my own.  I enjoy pipe smoking as it is 180 degrees difference from cigarettes and to be honest, they've never been able to prove any health risks from pipe smoking.  I'll write more on my pipes later.

Second, the economy right now here in PI is strange, everything is so expensive, they jack up the price of food, fares, gas everything but the salaries, its still the same. Politician is still very corupt,I really believe the saying " the poor is getting poorer but the rich is getting richer", that how it is here in my country.
Third, its strange when some guys still flirts with me even though I gain a lot of weight and I think I'm ugly lol and I'm also married!

9. What is one lesson you have learned in the past 12 months?
A lot, I learned to save money even if the money is tight riht now, I learn to be patience, to enjoy time even though I'm so want to be with my husband in the US, I learn to appreciate life with all the wars that is happening right now in other countries, and most of all I learned to pray more and to trust and have faith in God even more.

1. Have you ever forgotten your child in a store or at school?
I don't have a child yet, but hopely it will not happen to me. But I have the same experience it was my  4 year old nephew, we were in the church that time and i was trying to concentrate with the homily then I forgot about my nephew,  I did not pay attention to him for just seconds and he was gone, I was really worried that time, imagine it was so crowded in the church, I almost cry good thing I found him, he was outside just looking at the vendor who is selling toys and balloons.

2. Where did you go on your very first date? (Like...first first, not first with your spouse or current significant other!)
Gosh I can't remember, well I think it was just in the beach with friends.

3. What's your "silly" fear? (We're not talking water and heights.)
Hahahah believe it or not I'm scared of earthworms, I always find them yuckky lol.

4. Confrontation: do you cause it, deal with is as it comes, or run far far away?
If I can still handle it, or I'm still okay not getting piss yet, I have just to keep it to myself, but then if the situation is so terrible then I have really to confront the person.

5. Wood floors or carpet?
Well I like carpet but its really hard to maintain the cleanliness of it.Even though our Living room is carpeted right now,  I still think wood is  fine.

When Is a Tie Not Just a Tie?

1947 Countess Mara Ad

I spent the day out on Tuesday, just needed to get out of the house for a day and go shopping.  I rode the bus, went to many places and had quite the adventure.  Now you may or may not know, I'm interested in vintage clothing, specifically dressing in vintage clothing.  So when I was out 2 of the places I went were used clothing shops  (ukay-ukay) to a Filipino.  Goodwill and The Salvation Army maintain 2 large stores here and they both are within walking distance of one another... if you fancy a long walk that is.  All in alll I spent about 5 hours out shopping around and I came home with 1 tie.  Not a good day in the vintage fashion world.  Anyhow, I didn't think much of this tie when I first saw it, typical striped tie c. 1958-63 but I did know it was vintage.  Well heck for $2 I bought it and figured I'd research it later.

Dressed Up For Church
And research it I did... It's a Countess Mara which it turns out is a rather sosyal (high end) brand, or was anyhow back in the day.  The company was founded in 1935 by The Countess Mara who wished to bring high end european clothing to the USA.  An interesting decision in the midst of the Great Depression.  Her ties were always limited production, no more than 200 of each design were ever produced.  She soon had a following with the Hollywood crowd and Frank Sinatra was especially fond of her ties.  Unfortunately her company was sold off in 1998 and although her ties are still being made they just don't have the quality of ties from the 40's-60's.  So in the end, I made a good buy.  There were actually 3 ties in the store when I was there but 2 of them were not taken care of too well by their former owner and had horrible stains.  I've heard oxyclean works well to clean them but it's an attempt I'm not about to make right now.
