Spartan Race

SR_logo_banner.png
Spartan race may evoke images some grueling winner take all or die trying kind of sporting event but I assure you this is not the case with this Spartan Race.  What this is is a muddy new way to get yourself fit and meet all those goals you've been trying to meet.  Races start out with the 5k trail race for beginners to the 10k race with obstacles all the way up to the 40+ mile events for the most hardcore among us.  The best part is although many different people enter Spartan Race, 99.9% will finish and perhaps forevermore, have a thirst for mud and trail racing.
Spartan Race isn't just for guys though, girls get into it as well to test their mettle against the mud.  I've been thinking this would be a great way for me to lose some extra pounds and have some extreme fun in the meantime.  For frequently asked questions and answers check out: http://www.spartanrace.com//spartan-race-obstacle-course-faq.html.  Get your fitness into high gear and take it to the next level.  Check out Spartan Race and perhaps you will be one of the 300,000 people who will enter Spartan Race.  At the finish line you will know what it means to be a Spartan,  and know that it means to be legendary.

Girls Loves Jewelry

Hey I'm a girl right?  And well all love to have some jewelry.  What's better than a personalized heart pendants hanging from your neck that shows your husband loves you.  Now I don't have a lot of jewelry myself, mostly because it was expansive in the Philippines and over here in the USA I don't even want to think about the price.  I do have my wedding rings and a black and gold watch.  It's ok, I'm just a simple girl who doesn't want too much stuff and I never have the time to wear any jewelry at work because I'm a cashier at a gas station.  It's dirty sometimes and I don't want to risk breaking a bracelet on something.  I did see a lady the other day who was wearing a really pretty necklace.  I ask her what it is and she told me its a gold station necklace.  I look it up online and they're usually not affordable... unless you click the links above.  Cheers!

Expand Your Possibilities With Expand 'n Gro

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Scotts® for . All opinions are 100% mine.
When the weather is nice it's time to go outdoors and do some gardening!  And now there's a revolutionary new way to make your plants grow larger... up to 3x larger, by using Expand ‘n Gro™.  Made with coir, a product gathered from the husks and fibers of coconuts,  and Miracle Gro's own fertilizer, Expand and Gro will help your plants achieve their full potential by expanding up to 3x it's size to hold water and giving a slow release of fertilizers for your plants up to 6 months.  With all this, your plants can maximize their potential and grow up to 3x larger than plants grown in traditional potting soil.
EnG Product Shot.png
What especially interests me is it's ability to hold water and slowly release it.  We have a prolonged drought here where I live so by using expand and gro I won't have to water my plants as much and there's no waste water draining out the bottom of the pot where it'll pool in the saucer and breed mosquitoes.  I plan on having a garden this year and working hand in hand with expand and gro I'm sure it will be the envy of the neighborhood.

Marketing Locally

Everyone knows about the importance of SEO for their website, after all everyone always goes crazy when there's a supposed Google Page rank update.  What I'm here to talk about today is the importance of  local listings to their pageviews. Suppose there's an equestrian blog that wants to advertise.  They should look to advertising in their local market to increase their traffic flow.  Obviously Saddlery New York will want to concentrate some of their advertising budgets on listing in the New York market.  This way they are attracting customers who are more likely to buy their product.  When you start your online business, do all the major SEO stuff, but don't forget to list your website locally as well.  Your business will surely thank you for it.

The Pool That Turned Into A Pond

We have a swimming pool in the backyard.  Unfortunately the pool pump broke a long time ago and now we're left with a pond full of nasty green water.  I really want to buy a new pump and get the pool working again but my husband tells me it's too much work and we're gonna need so much money for a new pump and chemicals and ph meters to test the water.  He says it's acid water because of all the pine needles that keep dropping in there but I don't know.  Sorry I'm not writing like I used to but my job and English class has been taking up all my time.  So what do you think?  Should we spend the $300 for a new pump and equipment and fix the pool or just leave it as a pond?

Blu Cigs: The Better E-Cigarette

I've been a smoker For longer than I want to remember and I've been subjected to an industry fossilized by it's own arrogance and a government intent on taxing smoking into oblivion.  I can't do much about the latter, but the former is now being challenged by the E-cigarette.  A mini vaporizer that delivers not smoke but water vapor with flavors and nicotine.  While medical science has not evaluated the e-cigarette, it is glaringly obvious that there is less compounds in an e-cigarette that can cause harm since it's just water vapor.  When I found out that I had to write this article I decided to go out and buy a Blu E-cigarette from Walgreens.

Advertising Agencies

I can't say I know a whole lot about ads and advertising, that's really my husband on The Vintage Recipe Blog so I'm thinking if I want some advertising done maybe I should hire out to an agency.  That's why I was so excited to find out about Advertising Agency.  You see they do all kinds of ads from the simple to so complex and unlike many other ad agencies that give up on radio and TV, this agency does not.  They have a wide variety of ad types to suit every budget and every type of ad your company needs.  If you go to their site you can apply for a free portfolio to be send to you so you can see for yourself what kinds of work they do.

In these times it's hard to decide what kind of ads is best for your company and to find an ad agency that will be able to deliver your ads to a variety of media.  That's why That Advertising Agency is such a good deal because not only do you get the advertising they also have resources for websites as well.  They can help to market your website and get you the pageviews you need to succeed.  If you need help with Public Relations, they have it covered too with a PR plan that will help you market your business and make it grow.  Times is hard and business isn't what it used to be, now is not the time to go with some discount ad agency, go with the best and you can be assured of customers to help your business become great.

My First Job In America

I have to study this one :)
Yesterday I received a call from one of the companies that I applied to for a job.  Finally I'm so happy to say that I Got A Job!  I was very thankful to God for another blessing that He has given me.  I really thought that my first job over here is going to be working in Alaska.  For those of you who don't follow my blog yet,  I mentioned in my other post that a job is waiting for me in Alaska because my husband is working there every summer.  It is very hard to find a job here in the US especially with the economy right now and the inflation rate so high, there is  a lot of people who wants a job but there's not a lot of job in the market.  So I'm very thankful I'm one of those who got lucky to have a job right now.   As for a new immigrant like me I'm proud that I got a job even though its just a Sales Associate in one of the Convenience Store here.  I really need the experience and the reference and of course the money, it is important that you have a reference here in the US because they don't honor all your reference from your home country.  Your work history in your home country is not easily verifiable here in the USA also, so its like starting from scratch.

If everything falls into place, I have plans to continue my studies.  First I have to go to school for my GED or General Education Development.  Wikipedia defines the GED as:

General Educational Development (or GED) tests are a group of five subject tests which, when passed, certify that the taker has American or Canadian high school-level academic skills. The GED is also referred to as a General Education Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma or Graduate Equivalency Degree. 1

Hopefully I can pass it, though my husband said is all about American history and Math.  I know math and me doesn't go along pretty well lol, but I will try my best.  Because I think  my diploma may or may not be accepted over here due to the fact its from a foreign country, unless you come from Canada  then you are exempted.  That is the plan for now, its all in God's hands, and it depends if I don't get pregnant yet of course my family is my first priority.

I'm going to start training tomorrow, and I can't believe the training over here is with pay, wow in the Philippines its not like that!  Its really amazing, I'm thinking if I get my first salary I will really frame the money as a remembrance of my first job and salary here in the USA.  If my training goes well and I learn quickly my manager says I'm going to start work right away.  I need to become familiar with American money first because the majority of the work I'm doing is cashiering, though I had an experience of handling the cash register before I'm still nervous because I'm still learning the difference between a dime, quarter, nickel, and penny..  My husband says there's nothing to be nervous about I will get used to it in time.  A piece of advice to all new immigrants like me who have a hard time finding a job;  Don't get discouraged, review your resume, dress appropriately in your interview, and apply to as many jobs as you can.  Don't stop believing in yourself, don't lose hope as for me I think I applied to all the jobs I see posted online, and I got interviewed 4 times before I got this job right now.  And of course its also good to pray for God's guidance.  I would like to thank my father in law for all his advices and help, to my husband who is always so patient with me and loves me unconditionally, thank you mahal for being my driver♥.  To my mum though she is so far away from me I can still feel her love and prayers for me I love you mama♥ and To our Lord God Almighty for all the blessings and guidance thank You, To God Be The Glory.

My First Concert Experience with My Ultimate Favorite Band

Ely Buendia
The first time I went to a concert  is when I was still  in  high school.  Me and my childhood friend
decided to go watch my favorite band  Eraserheads, they were so famous back then, everybody is going gaga over them.  It was just a free concert sponsored by our Mayor in Davao City Philippines, celebrating the Araw ng Dabaw (Day of Davao City) so it was full of people.  I was so excited to watch the concert because not only was it my first time to watch a concert but its also my first time to see The Eraserheads in person and Ely Buendia the lead singer of the band, I was so infatuated with him before.  I was happy and excited when the member's of the bands started to come out from the walls built by iron stanchions and pass by the  velvet rope of course they are VIP.

My Favorite band in the Philippines
You could just imagine its a free concert, so I am so worried with my safety and seeing all the crowds going crazy when the band started playing.  Its a good thing they have a crowd control team, so I can enjoy the concert without worrying about the crowd doing crazy things. All in all I had fun and I did enjoy my first experience watching a free concert, even though my friend decided to leave me and go with her other friends to be drunk.  I didn't mind because I know she is not a music lover like me and she can't relate much to the concert.  It was unforgettable experience for me, especially in the middle of the concert when the people at the back start pushing, I thought there's gonna be a stampede.  The bouncers reinforced the barricades immediately to try to control the crowd, and with the lead singer asking the crowd to relax or else there not gonna continue the concert.  So the crowd behaved and we finally enjoyed the concert.  I'm still lucky I go home in one piece and no injuries, though I did not tell my parents the story or else they will sermon me like a priest.

The Death of Mayport

Recently we heard that the ferry that crosses the St. Johns River at Mayport will be closing down in September due to lack of revenue.  This is a huge mistake and will only quicken the slow pace of death that has been encroaching on Mayport ever since the US Navy moved the Aircraft Carrier to a different port.  If the amount of miller welders on Craigslist is any indication, we have a lot of welding personnel out of work right now.  The death of the ferry will simply ad the restaurants and shrimp fishing fleet to that list.  It would only take a small infusion of cash to keep the ferry going but the city government refuses to do it, instead dumping money into the never-ending black hole of road construction.  With the ferry closed traffic on A1A will now have to take a 35 mile detour over the Dames Point bridge to get to the south bank of the St. Johns River, an incredible lapse of judgement in today's era of high gas prices but what I have come to expect from a city council with their heads buried in the sand in order to ignore the real issues.

How To Save Money While Shopping

Who doesn't love shopping? I certainly love shopping, but with our economy right now we have to be stingy.  I don't know but girls really love shopping, when I arrived here in the USA I was amazed with all the products they have, there is a lot of choices.  The first time my husband brought me to the mall here in Jacksonville, I was really astonish with what I saw, there is a lot  choices here compare to what I am used in the Philippines.  From food to clothing, accessories, everything there's a lot to choose from that you will have a headache what to buy lol.  The only problem is it is more expensive over here, of course its dollar where talking about. When I buy something I can't help but to convert it  first to pesos, i.e. if I want to buy something for $50, I am thinking it is 2,150 pesos so I end up not buying it because I think its too expensive when its not; based on the prices here in the US.  I try to keep myself from doing it again, because I end up being so cheap. Furthermore, it always makes my husband frustrated whenever I do this.  I told my husband give me some time to adjust with the prices over here, I just came here 4 months ago, maybe after a year I wouldn't mind buying $100 worth of items without converting it to pesos first in my head.  That of course is if I earn my own money.

My husbands likes to shop online because its easy and hassle free.  You don't have to drive and used gas to go somewhere to buy things you want.  You just have to pay the shipping (unless the website is offering discounted shipping) and that's it  you just sit there and wait for your orders to arrive in the mail.  When I was researching online about how to save extra bucks while shopping, I came up with this website called No More Rack.  It is a daily deal site with free deals and huge savings.  I like nomorerack because they have daily deals and the price is very  economical, so you can still shop and save money.  While I was looking on the website, I found something that caught my eye, a great new pair of  shoes  for me, because what I brought with me from the Philippines is all dress shoes. Naturally,  I want something comfortable that you can just wear all day.

So if you want to shop but have limited budget, check out nomorerack.com now.

The best part about working at an animal shelter

Guest post written by Theresa Williamson
I love my job! I help homeless animals find homes at an animal shelter. It can be heartbreaking at times though when not enough people are adopting animals and some animals are living at the shelter for really long periods of time. There are just so many homeless animals out there and it can be a financial burden taking in one that isn't completely healthy. I understand that a lot of people can't afford to take in pets, but I like to help people understand how much it costs and how it can differ if you get a pet from a shelter versus a breeder.

I wish that I could afford to take in a few more pets on my own. I was online about a week ago looking up some information about my finances and the possibility of adopting another pet when I saw the site debtsettlementfamily. It looked like a great resource for what I needed and I used it to get some ideas about how to finally settle my debt.

I'd really love to take in a dog, a senior dog specifically. They're looked over so often that I feel bad for them.

Man's Bestfriend

Our first cat Trevor and his son Puckity at the background.
I have always been a pet lover, and have had animals all my life.  I always treat them like a part of the family and not just a pet.  I grew up with both dogs and cats and currently I have a cat and some fish but unfortunately I can't bring them with me, so they are in the Philippines and I'm sure my mother was taking care of them.  I remember when I was young my grandmother had a dog named Charisma, she was the first generation of the dog we had, until she got old and passed away, she leaves us with some puppies that as far as I remember they were still alive until I was in my high school days that time (1997); so I think they died old like more than 10 years old.  In our country the animals like cats and dogs, they are expected to have a life-frame of 8 years for cat and 10 years for dog: that's because our animals is an outdoor animals, they live outside the house and wanders around in the neighborhood, so they live a hard life. I also had a cat when were still living in Davao City, my husband name him Puckity, he was the one of the 2 first son's of our first cat Trevor.

We loved that cat so much, at first when his still a kitten he is giving as a hard time, because he is not potty trained yet, but then when he grow up he became nice and loving cat.  I remember that time when I was already sleeping, when I forgot to close the faucet in the kitchen  because that time we experience a rotating brownout,  when in the middle of night the water supply was back and the next thing I know it was flooding already in our living room.  And what Puckity do is he tried to wake me up by scratching my legs but I ignore him, I only get up when he purred at my face and when I heard the water gashing in the kitchen, thanks to my cat the only damage has done is our carpet got soaked.  I miss my cat, we believe Puckity got stolen from our house, because he never return after that day he was gone.

The dog with no face. Picture from The Morningstarr
Truly animals is like a human being sometimes, they are know to help humans or will try to save your life when you're in danger.  Like this dog name "Kabang"( means spotty), she sacrifice her life to save the two kids when they were walking across the street of Zamboanga City in the Philippines not knowing that a speeding motorcycle is fast approaching towards  them. The dog lost the top part of her snout because of the impact of the motorcycle.  The kids was out of danger and the the driver of the motorcycle had a few scratch.  Now the dog has no nose, but he is very famous now in the Philippines, a lot of people from over the world wants to help with the surgery of her face.  I wept when I first saw this news about Kabang, I feel sorry for the dog for what happen to her right now, but he is a hero, a one of  a kind animal.

Wow I can't believe its March already!  I was thinking time fly so fast over here in the US, or  Its just maybe because I was bored in the Philippines, oh wait I am also bored overhere LOL.  I can't wait for summer because were going to Alaska not to have a vacation but to work.  I am kind of excited and scared also, excited because I really want to see Alaska, I know it is so beautiful over there, scared because I don't know what its like to work over there but at least my husband is gonna be with me so I'm not worried, I'm just not looking forward to the flying and turbulence again  gosh.  Okay here is my entry for 5 Question Friday this week... Have Fun and Have a great weekend everyone!!!♥

Remember to @5crookedhalos me and use hashtag #5QF if you go the Twitter route!)

1. Where is your favorite vacation spot and why?
Beach in Davao City Philippines
Well we didn't experience to have a vacation yet, since I arrived here in the US, but in the we we're still in the Philippines we usually go in the Pearl Farm beach resort for a short vacation.  I like there because the island is so beautiful and the beach is pristine though I can't swim but my husband really love it over there.  We also go to beach just near in the place we live, its a 30 minute ferry ride, its called Paradise Island. We like it there because the beach is beautiful, the water is not that deep compare to Pearl farm and you can see a lot of coral reefs even in the shallow.  It is also cheaper than Pearl Farm.

Me @ Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island Davao City

2. What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Its buying cosmetics,  everytime we go out and I see something new or sale in the mall I can't really help myself not to buy.  I love buying eyeshadow, lipstick, just make up stuff.  I remember when I was still working that time in the Philippines before I meet my husband, I end up spending almost all of my salary just buying some make up stuff lol.

3. What is your favorite fashion trend right now? Or, in the past?
Before I love wearing boots, because it will make me look taller hahah.  Right now I don't care if I wear any high heels, I love wearing flats shoes or anything that I am comfortable wearing.

4. What are your spring break plans?
I really don't know, Its the first spring break for me so I don't have any idea what should we supposed to do when its spring break.  But maybe if I can find a job that would be good lol.

5. What baby names do you hate?
Hmm I hate names that old, so old you can't even pronounce it right or you never heard of it before.
